Pollution

Pollution

I wonder why pollution is such a big issue. Why does it have to kill so many sea mammals and sea birds?. Why does it have to kill even people?. Pollution is a big problem that has affected over 100 millions of people. They get sick, acquire allergies sometimes and results to cancer. Pollution results to polluted water. Every year 14 billion pounds of garbage is dumped into the ocean and most of it is plastic. The animals that live in the ocean will die because the plastic and rubbish has been blown onto them. People who live in places with high levels of air pollutants and are at the risk of death from lung cancer. Air pollutants is dangerous and they are things that make the air very unclean and dirty. Air pollutants affects kids more than adults because kids breathe more air and spend more time outside. Also it affects kids more because it is not good for there body and size. Pollution is one of the biggest global killers. If pollution affects babies then they will be born with birth defects. Birth defects is when the baby gets a disability or they can not hear. This will take medical or surgical treatment to fix this. I hope that pollution will go away and the only solution to do that is to not litter and to not  leave things on the ground. Think about it, the world so clean no rubbish or anything so please stop pollution.

Matariki is a Maori tradition that is celebrated every year. Matariki means the seven clusters and some people think of it as the mother star with six daughters and referred as the seven sisters. Matariki appears in the Eastern sky around the shortest day of the year. Matariki is a very special tradition because it only comes once a year. Matariki is also special because it’s something that belongs to everyone mostly the Maori’s. It is special to the Maori’s because it is their culture. Most people think that Matariki should be celebrated every year. Do you think it should be celebrated every year? Matariki appears in the end of May and continues to the early June.

Lunar eclipse

Lunar Eclipse

On Saturday April the 4th, Sky gazers from different parts of the world are treated to the third of the four lunar eclipses that will occur (take place) before the end of 2015. At 4:58 am PST (Pacific standard time) the moon disappeared behind the earth’s shadow. By 5:03 am, it was all over. The eclipse is best reflected (able to be seen) from the Western United States, New Zealand, Eastern Australia and many more. Residents from Eastern North America, Western South America and Middle Asia could see the eclipse partially (only in parts). Though the rest of the world have to sit this one out (they didn't see it from there point of view).

The eclipse of the moon occurs when the earth gets in the way of the sun and moon. The moon does not emit (produce, discharge) any light because it simply reflects the light from the sun. Sometimes lunar eclipses are short because it passes through the upper part of the earth’s shadow. When our planet gets in between the two, shadow falls onto the moon, thus the lunar eclipse. For lunar eclipses to occur there has to be a full moon, the sun, earth and the moon has to be placed perfectly and aligned with the sun.

Pitcher plants

Most of the time plants are the ones that get eaten. So when the plants get eaten they come up with revenge. Some plants are carnivores which means that they eat meat but definitely not steak. They are happy to feast on the bug that crosses their path. Pitcher plants are shaped like a pitcher or narrow champagne glass and they also look like a jug. The top and inside of the pitcher is covered with a sweet smelling juicy nectar. When the insects come they take a sip and then they fall into the pitcher and down down they go.  There the plant breaks them down, the plant excrete a liquid that squish them to pieces. Some pitcher plants are large that they can catch and eat rats or frogs alive. Most carnivorous plants live in boggy places and lives in wet soil that do not have lots of nutrients. Carnivorous plants are exotic, but most of them grow in the US than anywhere else. Some people take carnivorous plants from the wild and grow them in their backyard. Would you like to have them in your backyard?

Facts about the Nikau tree.

Facts about the Nikau
tree

Most palm trees exist in tropical countries but not the Nikau tree. Nikau is an expensive tree because the bulb in the middle of the tree is rare and you would have to destroy the whole tree if you want to eat it. The fronds of Nikau trees are used for roofs to build houses. They are built together in layers to prevent rain to seep through and to protect the house from the heat of the sun.
The Maori used nikau to make bags, hats and clothings. They also use it to weave baskets in making these things. They also used the leaf strips of palm fronds. The Nikau is special to New zealand and the Maori. It is special to the Maori because Nikau has many uses to them and it is special to New zealand because it is our native tree.

How to make chocolate.

How to make chocolate

Ingredients: Cocoa powder, cocoa butter, sugar and milk.

According to Peter Higgins of Purdy’s chocolate company you have to follow many steps in order to make the perfect chocolate of your choice.

Method:

* The first step is getting cocoa beans from a cocoa tree.
* The cocoa tree comes from the most warmest region.
* 70% of the cocoa comes from west Africa.
* When the cocoa beans are ready you put it in the sun to dry and to develop the flavour.
* The beans are blended dried, and the shells are broken only leaving the nibs.
* The nibs are grounded to a liquid cocoa mass.
* The mass then creates cocoa powder and cocoa butter.
* Sugar, milk and lecithin are then added and blended together and are put into series of rollers.
* Conching is the last preparation. The ingredients are carefully blended and monitored into a large tank for a final flavour development.
* Then you put the chocolate into a block and there is your perfect chocolate.

Book review 14: Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

This book was about a girl named Alice. Alice is lovely, kind and a delightful girl. She has soft, long beautiful blonde hair. In Alice’s garden she was hoping for something good to happen.  She was so bored watching her sister read a book while she was up in a tree talking to herself constantly. Then she falls asleep and when she woke up, she saw a white rabbit in a suit. The rabbit ran to his rabbit hole and Alice followed him. As Alice followed the rabbit she fell in the hole too! In the hole,  she landed with a big hit on a hard floor. Then she found herself in a whole different world that was not normal at all. That different world was called ‘Wonderland’. In Wonderland she met a lot of weird creatures and a lot of weird people. Alice tried to find different ways to get out of Wonderland because she wanted to go back to her home and garden. At the end,  Alice finally found a way of how to get out and luckily she made it. However, she also became friends with the people of ‘Wonderland’.

My favourite character in this book is Alice because she goes through a whole different land and tries to go through many different doors to make it back safely to her home.

I rate this book a 8 out of 10. It is full of excitement and adventure and that is what I love about it.

I recommend this book for 8 and over because It is really interesting and it has a little bit of hard words in it. I also think that other people will enjoy it like I did.

Work on: How fast can a Marble roll?

How fast can a marble roll?

Materials: 3 books (2 big and 1 small) 2 metre rulers and 4  30cm rulers.

How Did We Do The Experiment: We did this experiment by taping 2 metre rulers together and we sat it on top of 1 big book. Then we taped the 4 30cm rulers and rested it on 2 small books. After that we tested how far can it go and how fast.

We did it on carpet floor. The carpet floor is flat but we did it in a slope in downhill direction. By doing it downhill we rested the tip of our metre ruler on a chair so that our marble can go down. So we started doing these for few attempts.

Our Attempts with the small marble:
Attempt 1- 1.18 seconds
Attempt 2- 1.20 seconds
Attempt 3- 1.31 seconds
Attempt 4- 1.33 seconds
Attempt 5- 1.55 seconds

Our Attempts with the big marble:
Attempt 1- 2.04 seconds
Attempt 2- 2.01 seconds
Attempt 3- 2.31 seconds
Attempt 4- 2.04 seconds
Attempt5- 2.28 seconds

Highest Attempt for the small marble: Our highest Attempt for the small marble is Attempt 5. Attempt 5 has the score of 1.55 which is the highest.

Highest Attempt for the big marble: Our highest Attempt for the big marble is Attempt 3. Attempt 3 was the score of 2.31 which is the highest.

Highest Attempt out of small and big marble: The highest Attempt of all is Attempt 3 with the score of 2.31. This is the highest score from both marbles and this is the score from the big marble.

Conclusion for the big marble: We now know that Attempt 3 was the longest one to finish and Attempt 3 was from the big marble. Attempt 3 went down the whole way to the ending point and took 2.31 seconds. The Fastest from the big marble is Attempt 2 which is the score of 2.01 seconds.

Conclusion for the small marble: We now know that Attempt 5 took the longest with the score of 1.55 seconds. The fastest from the small marble is Attempt 1 with the score of 1.18 seconds.

Role models

Role models

Role models

Role models are people who set examples for younger ones. Role models are also people who make sure that younger ones and probably older ones are doing the right thing instead of the wrong thing. Sometimes role models can be a little overboard but sometimes their only doing that because they want you to do the right thing. Role models also teach you how to do the right things because it is good to do it and it makes you a better person. Also because they want you to teach other young people and older people how to do the right thing and so that they realize they need to be a better person. When you are a better person you don’t do bad things as much as bad people. So being a role model would help make you a nicer, kinder and more loving person. Being a role model can be hard but it’s a nice way of showing how much you care about other people being a good person and respecting others. It also shows that you want to show younger ones how it’s done and how it’s done the right way. Role models can be people who look over you and watch your actions and words. Sometimes role models go mad at you but be thankful that there helping you to become a better person.

 My hero

My hero is my mum. My mum is my hero because she pays for my school fees, makes  my lunch every morning and the fact that she took care of me my whole life. My mum means everything to me because she is the best mum in the world that I could ever imagine out of history. My mum is a mother of three. Ashley, AJ and Alyssa. My mum is kind, loving, generous and faithful. She cares for me and accepts who I am. When God created my mum he gave me the best mum and a mum that I could ever ask for. She has been with me every step of the way throughout my whole entire life. She buys me dinner, she cooks for me and she buys me clothes. My mum is fantastic and I love her.
