The early Chatham Islands

The early Chatham Islanders

When the Polynesian people came from new Zealand to the Chatham Islands they had to adapt or change their way of doing things. Firstly these people tried to find their food because they couldn't grow their usual vegetables cause of the cooler climate. For example they couldn't grow kumara taro and yams so instead they had to find new food. So they went of exploring. The boat was a waka boat so they could fit all their food. Then they made a new boat and made it very buoyant so the boat would not sink but float above the water. The people who went into the boat were the Maori people the Polynesian. Then the European visitors came and they did not appreciate the skills of the Maori people because they thought it meant that they  were clumsy and thought that the boat was very clumsy. Time past and the canoes brought back the men from their long journey and the skilled invaders learnt to adapt life in new environment.

  1. Hi AJ
I like the way you explained how they had to adapt to new things. I have also learnt and wrote about the Chatham Islands. Do you think it is good that they had to change their environment? keep up the good work.
