Keyboards, Past and Present

  1. What are some different types of keyboard instruments?
- Piano, Electric Keyboard, Pipes, Flute, Organs, Clavichord, Harpsichord.

2. Why are pipe organs used in Churches and Cathedrals?
- Because each pipe produces a single pitch and it
has a different volume.

3. How was the piano designed so that its volume could be changed?
- In the Ancient world, Strings were attached and stretched over bows, gourds and boxes to amplify the sound. They were fastened by pegs, ties and pins so that it could produce different sounds.

4. Why would musicians want to be able to change the volume of the instrument they played?
- They wanted to change it because they wanted it to be more interesting and so that it could have more volume.

5. Why do you think musicians use the piano when they work on new compositions?
- Because they might want to change the volume and style of the music.
6. Which instrument has greater range of pitch: Harpsichord on page 3  or the Piano on page 4?
- We think the Piano because it is called a Pianoforte. Piano means “Soft”, and forte means “Loud”.

7. Why do people enjoy playing portable keyboards?
- Because they can take it wherever they want to go.
